Mater on the internet Who makes use of the webpages of universities? With what purpose, which thematical preferences? How do the users rate the web-offers of scientific institutions? Which sections could be improved or extended, which offers are less interesting? These are the central questions our "online poll for evaluation of university websites" seaks to answer. Particular emphasis is put on the identification of the target groups with certain offers and on the service orientation of the evaluated websites. Altogether 19 universities are taking part in the poll, that was initiated by "Arbeitskreis Hochschulevaluation" (Working group university evaluation) of the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Hochschulpressestellen". The survey is supervised by Utz Lederbogen and Dr. Joachim Trebbe of the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the Free University of Berlin. The interactive media and the internet in particular pose new challenges for science and research. The virtual space of online-communication creates an entirely new publicity, a worldwide space for communication with its own structures, topics, and communication procedures. The question arises: Are universities properly prepared for these new challenges? Which opportunities can be created by multi-medial forms of communication in a world of growing competition, where efficency not only has to be increased but also to be communicated to the public? Our projective is to answer this question. Based on the results of the upcoming survey, we want to work out and design practicable concepts of university communication on the internet. Project
